You don’t want your grandmother’s heirloom china or your very expensive party champagne flutes that you got for your wedding day to end up in shards, do you? Surprise fact: bubble wrapping alone won’t prevent your breakables from shattering. You’ll need to learn how to pack breakables for storage like a professional if you want your delicate items to stay in one piece. Luckily, you are in the right place. The best movers in Hamilton Ontario will show you how to pack breakables for storage such as lamps, glassware, and vases so they’d make it from your old house to your new abode.

Here are our easy tips to pack breakables for storage quickly and efficiently:

1. Prepare ahead of time!

When you need to pack breakables for storage such as valuable crystal, porcelain, and other delicate items will take some time. You need to make sure all the pieces are packed snugly, to prevent shifting.

2. Gather the right tools.

Get some quality boxes in various sizes; a lot of packing paper, bubble cushioning for padding, cardboard inserts (but these aren’t mandatory), scissors, and packing tape.

3. Stock up!

  • If you’re planning to use cardboard boxes to pack fragile items, follow these tips. Don’t stuff the boxes full, then later hope that some extra packing tape will keep them secured. Bulging boxes will also make the job harder for your movers. Over packed boxes are harder to stack on the moving truck.
  • Instead of trying to pack all breakables for storage at once by jamming everything into them, get more boxes than you think you’ll need! In addition to this, remember that cardboard has a shelf life. Cardboard boxes can become flimsy over time — so don’t count on your basement stored boxes to keep your stuff safe.
  • Old towels, small blankets, newsprint, or even paper towels are not going to protect your fragile items. They are not wise choices. Newsprint can be dirty and means you have even more washing to do in your new home. Paper towels are not strong and because it is not reliable. Old towels slip easy and cannot be secured in place with tape, which is crucial for proper packing. You should invest in the proper tools and you’ll be safe.

Pack breakables for storage in boxes of various sizes

You might think it’s best to buy boxes that are all the same size. But setting up your storage unit is a lot like a game of Tetris. To beat the puzzle, boxes of different sizes perform best when trying to fit everything in the storage in one go.

Preventing moving tragedies is a simple matter of thorough preparation and obtaining the right gear.

Find boxes which size ranges from as tiny as a shoebox to ottoman large. Keep in mind, though, that you will likely not be able to securely carry a box larger than 2-feet square. Another smart move is to pack breakables for storage by giving priority to the ones that are on the heavier side. Use shallower boxes for this. Fill the big ones, on the other hand, with the lighter stuff. It goes without saying that you should place heavy items at the bottom and add lighter items on top — never the other way around.

Be generous with your supplies

When it comes to packing odd-shaped items, be generous with the boxes. What that means is, if you have particularly delicate, irreplaceable heirlooms, they should have a box to themselves. Try this technique to pack breakables for storage sagely: Place a blanket on the bottom of a deeper box, then place the carefully wrapped item inside, and add a pillow on top. After you pack fragile items like this, seal up their boxes, label them “FRAGILE“ on every side. Then write down each box’s contents next to the “fragile” sign.

Pack breakables for storage carefully so that there’s no wiggle room!

Usually, all your glasses, cups and mugs, would need cellular box inserts to keep the items separated and avoid juggling. However, you do not have to go out of your way to find these inserts. It’s more important to wrap each breakable up completely. Use two layers of packing paper for extra-sensitive items such as wineglass, which are really thin.

Many moving companies offer dish packs, whether you’ll be relying on their packing services or doing it yourself.

You’ll also want to stuff hollow items such as goblets and vases, with crumpled packing paper, before wrapping them individually with more paper. Only then you can safely pack them inside a box lined with paper or bubble cushioning. Finally, when it comes to flat items like plates and picture frames, place them in a box vertically after wrapping each item in packing paper. Then keep alternating frames with a sheet of bubble wrap between each one.

And here are more of our moving tips to packing breakables for storage:

  1. Plates – This may come as a surprise, but you should pack your plates vertically in small to medium boxes. You ought to line those boxes with crumpled packing paper on the bottom and top. Wrap plates individually with bubble wrapping and secure the lids of your boxes with tape. Always crumple more paper in between the standing plates. But, be careful not overpack the box.
  2. Lamps – Place lamp shades flat side down in a separate box from the base of the lamp. Wrap it with lots of paper. Pack bases the same way – in a large box with a lot of crumpled paper and wrap it with bubble padding.
